In 1984, an application to the Keswick Foundation by Sister Gabriel O'Mahoney resulted in sponsorship for Prof James Hanratty of St Joseph Hospice, UK to visit Hong Kong. The visit of Prof Hanratty stimulated and brought together professionals, volunteers, families and friends sharing an interest in caring of the dying. Together with Sister Gabriel, Dr Vincent Tse, Dr Yu Wing Kwong, Lucy Chung a nurse, Rev Ralph Lee and Rev John Russell formed a group who discussed the needs of dying cancer patients. From this core group the Society for the Promotion of Hospice Care was developed in 1986. |
