Life & Death Education
Introduction
What is Life and Death Education?
The Chinese says birth, old age, sickness and dying are stages one must go through in life. We believe death, dying and bereavement are fundamental and universal aspects of the human experience. Individuals and societies can only achieve fullness of living by understanding and appreciating these realities. The absence of such understanding and appreciation may result in unnecessary suffering, loss of dignity, alienation, and diminished quality of living.
Death education is about death, dying and bereavement. The aim of it is to contribute to general education as a basis of personal development and responsible social participation.
The Societyˇ¦s goal of promoting death education is to:
-
Increase public awareness of hospice services and facilities in Hong Kong and how to go about accessing them.
-
Promote hospice values, affirming what life is about and thereby accepting death as a natural stage of life.
-
Develop greater understanding about dying and death so that the community could offer support to those in need.
-
Foster an openness on end-of-life discussions in the community, encouraging people for advance care planning.
-
Advocate the right to face death with dignity and support and ability to access appropriate end-of-life care in the community.
