World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, which is designated on the second Saturday of every October, is coordinated by a network of hospice and palliative care national and regional organisations that support the development of hospice and palliative care worldwide. Every year approximately 70 countries take part in the celebration with a variety of activities including public awareness campaigns, advocacy with policy makers, fundraising events and media promotions. The first World Hospice and Palliative Care Day was initiated in 2005 with a mission to generate a collective global voice to raise awareness of the many issues relating to hospice and palliative care. It also aimed to draw people's attention to the needs - medical, social, practical, spiritual - of people living with terminal diagnosis and their families, as well as to raise funds to support the development of hospice palliative care services around the world.
