Grief recovery support group

Grief is a normal and natural emotional response to losing a loved one but it affects each person differently. In other words, there is no textbook solution to addressing it. Some people choose to cope with it alone and may not want or need outside assistance. Others may find comfort in sharing their pain, anger, sadness and other emotions they feel after a loss. For these individuals, meeting with others who are going through something similar can be a comfortable first step towards recovery.

Structured Bereavement Groups

Bereavement support groups are offered at the Jockey Club Home for Hospice (JCHH) to connect grieving individuals and help them navigate the bereavement process with positivity and peer support. These groups may be structured differently to accommodate clients with various backgrounds and needs.

  • Regular activities
    • Tea gatherings for the newly bereaved
    • Remembrance Programs

    • “Recovering Path from Men Grief” for widowers

    • “Grief Journey in the Golden Years” for elderly spousal loss

Tea gathering for the newly bereaved

>For the newly bereaved, our tea gatherings offer a safe setting to share and receive support. Our counselors will start off by explaining each stage of the bereavement process and providing an overview of the bereavement support services available. Afterwards, the floor will be opened up to participants to share their experiences, thoughts and feelings. Opening up to strangers is often a daunting prospect, especially for grieving individuals. However, sharing with others who have gone through, or are still going through, similar circumstances will help you feel less alone and more supported during this difficult time.

Remembrance Programs

Festivals, holidays and special occasions, such as birthdays and anniversaries, are often painful moments within the bereavement process. As families gather to celebrate these events, the bereaved are reminded of their loss, which could magnify their sense of loneliness and sorrow. For these individuals, even brief moments of enjoyment can be overshadowed by feelings of guilt, as if their happiness is a sign of betrayal to the deceased. Our Remembrance Programs are designed to help you remember the ones you have lost as you learn to enjoy life’s celebrations again.
